In the salon with celebrated stylist Joey Scandizzo

He's one of the country’s most in demand stylists...

Has been recognised with the coveted Australian Hairdresser of the Year title multiple times, and is often referred to as “hairdresser to the stars.”

And that’s just the beginning.

Melbourne-based Joey Scandizzo is a multi-talented creative, who might be mentoring his team in the South Yarra salon – which, lucky for us, is located a short stroll from Beverly – one day, preparing to style local and international celebrities for renowned events in Melbourne and beyond the next, and product developing at Eleven Australia, where he is Co-Creative Director, the other.

While Joey is incredibly passionate about his craft, team, collaborators and vibrant industry, he’s all about balance, with playing sports with family and a morning run both central parts of his routine.

Joey recently took some time out of his busy schedule to chat highlights and proudest moments with us, as well as must-have styling tools, new year hair trends, prepping for events such as the Brownlow and Spring Racing Carnival, and more.

What inspired your career path?

Honestly, it started pretty casually. I was a high school dropout and needed a job, and my dad suggested hairdressing, partly because you work indoors, and partly because it was “a way to meet girls.”

I liked the sound of that, but the moment I started, I fell in love with the industry. The creativity, the people, the energy of the salon – it all clicked instantly, and I’ve never looked back.

What have the highlights been so far?

Winning Australian Hairdresser of the Year was a big moment, but some of my greatest highlights have been opening the salons, growing an incredible team, and seeing Eleven Australia, the hair care brand I helped create, gain traction locally and internationally.

Working backstage at Fashion Weeks, styling major events, and collaborating with so many creative people has also been a huge privilege.

What are you most proud of – both professionally and personally?

Professionally, I’m proud of my team, my salons, and what we’ve achieved in the industry. Watching young stylists develop their careers never gets old.

Personally, I’m proud of the balance I’ve built with my family – starting my mornings with a run, being active, and spending time playing sports with my kids or watching them play. That’s what keeps me grounded.

Where do you go for inspiration when it comes to new looks?

Inspiration comes from everywhere – fashion, street style, travel, culture, even conversations with clients. I’m constantly watching how people wear their hair naturally and how they want to express themselves. Runway shows, editorial work, and collaborating with other creatives also keep me sharp and open to new ideas.

What makes the Joey Scandizzo salon experience so special?

We focus on genuine connection. Every client should feel understood and confident in the chair. Our team is warm, highly trained, and passionate, and we tailor every detail of the service. It’s elevated hairdressing without the attitude – a place where people feel looked after.

How would you describe this year’s biggest hair trends?

This year is all about effortless luxury. Think healthy, glossy hair with shape and movement:

  • Soft layers and face-framing cuts are huge – they offer versatility and a personalised finish.
  • Modern bobs continue to dominate, from the box bob to the fluid, undone bob.
  • Low-maintenance colour is also big: expensive brunettes, soft lived-in blonde, and natural dimension.

It’s less about perfect styling and more about hair that looks naturally elevated.

What are your must-have styling tools, and why?

A powerful blow-dryer is essential, and the Shark Hair Dryer has become one of my favourites – it’s fast, lightweight, and gentle on the hair. I also rely on a great straightening iron and quality brushes. Good tools give you control without compromising the hair’s condition, which is the foundation of any good style.

How do you and the team prepare for key events such as the Brownlow and Spring Racing Carnival?

Preparation starts well before the event. We work closely with clients and stylists to map out looks, coordinate with makeup and wardrobe, and understand the vibe of the event.

On the day, it’s all about organisation, timing, and teamwork. We create looks that last, photograph well, and complement the full outfit. It’s fast-paced, but it’s where the team really shines.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My day starts with a run – it clears my head and sets me up for the day. From there, I’m either in the salon with clients, mentoring the team, or working on creative projects. Every day is different, which is what I love about this industry.

And no matter how busy it gets, the best part of my day is always spending time with my kids, playing sports together or watching them at their games.
